Jabba's Throne by kohse Jabba's Throne by kohse
Oil painting I did for the 501st Legion's Droid Hunt event at Star Wars Celebration VI. I painted this after getting some tips from Dave Dorman. 16x 10 Holbein oils on masonite. This was my first time using Masonite or this technique so let me know what you think.

Thank you very much. If you are at San Diego Comic Con I will have the original on display.

I really like how you painted Jabba! And I can definitely see the Dave Dorman influence.
Overall it's a great painting and I always like it when artists choose to work traditionally.
However I think that Leia's pose looks a bit too stiff. Also Boba Fett doesn't seem to fit into the composition. Judging by how you painted him I would say he's meant to be a background element but since you put him in the center of the piece I always end up staring at him instead of the real focus of the piece. The composition would be more interesting without him in my opinion.( I know I'm nitpicking right now but you asked for a critique :D)
By the way, i think it's a shame that this deviation has 580 views but only 4 comments!

Thank you. You are totally correct on Leia. There is no image of Leia in that pose or even with that lighting so I had to make it up. As deadline loomed I had to move on to other parts. Hopefully I will get some time to fix that in the future.

The composition was experimental for me. While the painting is 16x20 only about 10x20 is being used (the image will be cropped from Jabba's tattoo to C3PO's elbow but still be full height). I'll post it once I get the final art from the designer. Boba was supposed to fade into the background but his clove is too bright and that draws the eye away from the path I wanted. Nice catch. I wish I had noticed that before. If I get time to adjust Leia, I will fix that as well.

Thanks very much for the critique

Glad I could help.
Yeah, I know that problem. Sometimes you don't notice a "mistake" you've made until somebody points it out to you.
Don't worry, it's not that big a deal. As I said its a great painting!
Curious to see how it'll look cropped and lettered!
